Pinterest engineers kill hidden CPU zombies that throttled kubelet
A stray Amazon ECS agent in Pinterest’s base image was crash‑looping, creating tens of thousands of zombie memory cgroups. The kubelet spent seconds every sync walking this bloated list, monopolising a CPU core and crashing Ray‑based ML jobs. Disabling the unused agent and rebooting eliminated the bottleneck, restoring stable training workloads.
