Sony and Warner sue Anthropic: Claude allegedly trained on torrented pirated works
Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell filed suit in Northern California, accusing Anthropic of a "brazen campaign" of torrenting, scraping licensed lyrics sites, and raiding pirate libraries to train Claude. The complaint names Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann personally, alleging Mann used BitTorrent to download over five million pirated books. Across "tens of thousands" of works at up to $150,000 each, exposure runs into the billions. Anthropic says it will defend itself.
