OpenAI says coding agents are becoming research interns
OpenAI says its researchers now run coding agents in concurrent sessions throughout the day, writing code faster and tackling increasingly complex experiments. The important shift is not automation of one task, but a tighter research loop: people choose priorities and judge results while agents handle work that can take a skilled researcher several days. OpenAI is targeting a more autonomous AI researcher by March 2028.
