Gemini’s mountain plan ended in a rescue mission
Three novice hikers planned Mount Shasta’s Clear Creek ascent with Google’s Gemini, which reportedly recommended too little food and water for an eight-hour climb. They summited after the noon turnaround, descended in darkness, went off-route into Mud Creek Canyon, and spent the night before Forest Service rangers rescued them. The failure was not just bad routing: AI advice displaced local conditions, conservative planning, and basic backup navigation.
