AI is turning cross-role experiments into recurring work
Workers are using ChatGPT for tasks outside their usual occupations, then returning to those tasks often enough that jobs may broaden without changing titles. OpenAI analyzed more than 1.5 million work-related messages from April through July 2026 and found recurring cross-occupation use growing as a share of observed AI activity. Outside their roles, workers tend to provide more context and ask for verification, suggesting they are borrowing expertise rather than learning an entire new field.
