Chinese open models cross the commercial viability threshold
Chinese models GLM-5.2 and Kimi K3 have pushed open-weight AI across a commercial-viability threshold, with agentic capabilities reaching a similar point to Claude Code in December 2025. Open-weight means the model weights are available for downstream use, unlike an API-only closed model. The author says Chinese models surpassed American open-weight models in technical capability and unit economics about 18 months ago.
