US warns AI firms that model distillation has gone industrial
US security agencies say Chinese AI firms, including DeepSeek and Moonshot AI, have been extracting proprietary knowledge from American models since at least 2024, putting model developers on notice to tighten access. The method, called distillation, repeatedly queries a model, draws information from its answers, and uses that data to train another system at industrial scale.
