NYC pauses student-facing generative AI through eighth grade
New York City Public Schools will impose a 2026–27 moratorium on student-facing generative AI in grades 2K–8, keeping younger students from using tools that can bypass work they need to think through themselves. Generative AI means systems that create text, images, audio, or other content from instructions, and the city says these systems can also produce inaccurate or biased information. High school students instead get limited, guided use for approved purposes, alongside AI safety and responsibility lessons.
