Trump leaves AI safety to voluntary company rules, not mandates
AI companies will police their own systems under voluntary standards backed by President Donald Trump, giving OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Google and Nvidia more room to set safety rules without binding government requirements. The agreement calls for independent auditors to check whether systems work as intended and for companies to prevent tools from hacking or accessing technical systems in unintended ways. That puts the burden of enforcement on the companies as their agents face scrutiny for going rogue.
