Generative AI designs proteins that edit human genomes more efficiently

Researchers at Integra Therapeutics, Pompeu Fabra University, and Barcelona’s Centre for Genomic Regulation designed and lab-tested synthetic proteins that edit the human genome more efficiently than natural proteins. They trained generative AI on the diversity of mobile genome elements, then used it to produce new proteins for testing. The work, published in Nature Biotechnology, points to a larger menu of gene-editing components than evolution alone provides.
