Texas freezes data center permits as its power queue hits 474 GW
Texas has frozen new data center permits after ERCOT’s large-customer queue jumped from 63 GW at the end of 2024 to 474 GW by June, with data centers making up about 90% of it. Developers often submit speculative projects across multiple sites, leaving planners unable to tell which loads are real or who should pay for upgrades. Local trust is also weak: only 28 of 377 companies answered a state survey on resource use.
