Your data, plainly.
LODE is a free email newsletter and a companion mobile reader app. We collect the little we need to run them — nothing more. This page explains exactly what that is, on both the email/web side and in the app. Last updated July 14, 2026.
What we collect
- Your email address and chosen topics — only if you subscribe to the newsletter (from the app or the web). So we know what to send and where.
- Email engagement. Whether a message was delivered, opened, or its links clicked — measured through our email provider — so we can tell if the newsletter is reaching you.
- Product analytics. On the website and in the app we record usage — page and screen views, taps, and anonymous session recordings of how the interface is used — through our analytics provider (PostHog). This is tied to a random device identifier, never to your name or email, and it helps us find and fix rough edges.
- Push token (app only). If you turn on "briefing ready" notifications, we store an anonymous device push token so we can send them. Turn notifications off and it stops.
- On-device data (app only). Your followed topics, bookmarks, and preferences live on your device, not on our servers — the app has no account or login. Uninstalling clears them.
- Anti-abuse signals. Your IP address is used transiently to rate-limit signups and, where enabled, for a bot check (Cloudflare Turnstile). We don't build a profile from it.
How we use it
- To send the newsletters you subscribed to, and our subscription lifecycle emails (confirmation and welcome).
- To measure deliverability and engagement in aggregate, so we can make the product better.
- To understand how people use the app and site (in aggregate) so we can improve them, and to deliver any notifications you turn on.
- To prevent spam, abuse, and fraudulent signups.
We do not sell or rent your personal data. When a newsletter carries a clearly labeled sponsorship, clicks on that sponsor's link are counted for the advertiser's reporting — as aggregate totals, never tied to your identity.
Who processes your data
We use a small set of trusted providers to run the service: an email delivery provider (Resend) to send and measure messages, a product-analytics provider (PostHog) for usage analytics and session recordings, a push-notification service (Expo) to deliver app notifications, Cloudflare Turnstile for bot protection, and standard cloud hosting and storage (including Cloudflare R2). These providers process data on our behalf under their own terms and security practices.
Retention
We keep your email and subscription preferences for as long as you're subscribed. Unsubscribing stops all sends. If your address hard-bounces or you mark a message as spam, we add it to a suppression list so we never email you again. On-device app data stays until you clear it or uninstall.
Your choices
- Unsubscribe anytime — one click, from the footer of any issue, or manage your subscriptions.
- Notifications — turn app notifications off anytime from the app's Fields screen or your device settings.
- Access or deletion — email us and we'll honor it. Uninstalling the app removes everything it stored on your device.
